3G network to be switched off in Switzerland - What does this mean for you as a TalkTalk customer?
From July 1, 2025, the 3G network in the Sunrise network - and therefore also for TalkTalk customers - will be gradually deactivated. This may sound like a big change at first, but it mainly affects older devices and SIM cards. What does this mean for you in concrete terms? How do you know if you are affected? And how can you easily switch to 4G or 5G? Don't panic: We'll answer your questions and help you step by step.
What do 3G, 4G and 5G actually mean?
When we talk about 3G, 4G or 5G, we are talking about generations of mobile networks - in other words, the technology that your smartphone uses to make calls, surf the internet and transfer data.
What is the 3G network?
3G stands for the third generation of mobile communications and is also known as UMTS. At the beginning of the 2000s, it enabled mobile internet at a usable speed for the first time - i.e. checking emails, surfing the web or using simple apps. A quantum leap by the standards of the time.
What is 4G?
4G or LTE is significantly faster, more stable and more energy-efficient. It is now the standard in Switzerland - with download speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s and much better network coverage. 4G is indispensable for streaming, video calls or surfing the internet.
What is 5G?
5G is the latest generation of mobile communications - with even faster data rates, even lower latency and enormous network capacity. Perfect for data-intensive applications such as cloud gaming, AR/VR or smart homes. 5G is already widespread in cities and conurbations.
Briefly summarized:
3G: Obsolete, will be switched off.
4G: Current standard - fast, stable, reliable.
5G: future standard - particularly powerful.
Why is the 3G network in Switzerland being switched off?
The shutdown of the 3G network is not an isolated case in Switzerland - it is a global trend. Many countries such as Germany, the USA and Australia have already taken this step.
The reasons for the shutdown:
More efficient use of frequencies:
The 3G frequencies will be used for 4G and 5G in future - because these technologies are significantly more powerful and efficient. This means that more network capacity can be created for modern applications.
Technically outdated:
3G is now 20 years old and is simply no longer competitive with today's requirements for speed and stability. Compared to 4G, 3G consumes much more energy per data unit and offers less network performance.
Future-oriented infrastructure:
The focus of network operators is on expanding modern technologies - especially 5G. This means that rural regions will also have better coverage in the future.
TalkTalk in the Sunrise network:
TalkTalk uses the Sunrise mobile network. Sunrise will gradually reduce 3G coverage from July 1, 2025. After this date at the latest, a reliable 3G connection will no longer be guaranteed - Internet, telephony and SMS will then only work via 4G and 5G. More information can be found on the Sunrise homepage.
What does the 3G switch-off mean for you as a TalkTalk customer?
Whether you need to change anything in your setup when switching off depends on which device you are using and whether it already supports 4G or 5G.
You are using an older device (3G only):
In this case, your smartphone will no longer work from July 2025. You won't be able to use the internet, make calls or send text messages - not even emergency calls. You will have to switch to a modern device.
You are using a device with 4G but without VoLTE:
The device still works for surfing - but voice telephony may not work, as this must then run via VoLTE (Voice over LTE). Be sure to check whether your device supports VoLTE and whether it is activated in the settings.
You are using a 4G/5G-capable device with VoLTE:
Then you don't need to do anything. You already make calls and surf the web via modern networks and won't notice anything after 3G is switched off.
Your SIM card is older:
Some older SIM cards do not yet support 4G or 5G. In this case, you will be notified by TalkTalk. The exchange is uncomplicated and free of charge.
How to find out if your cell phone is still working
Unsure whether your smartphone supports 4G or 5G? No problem - you can easily check with these steps:
1. check mains display:
Is "4G", "LTE" or "5G" displayed at the top of your smartphone? Then your device is technically ready for the future.
2. activate VoLTE:
Go to your phone's settings and activate the "VoLTE" or "4G calls" option. On Samsung devices, you can usually find this function under "Connections > Mobile networks".
Make 3rd test call:
Call someone and observe whether "4G" remains active during the call. If your device switches to "3G", you are missing VoLTE.
Check 4th model year:
Almost all smartphones from 2018 onwards are 4G and VoLTE-capable. Older models such as the Galaxy S4 or iPhone 5 could be affected.
5. personal consultation:
You are welcome to visit us directly in one of the nearest mobilezone stores or contact our in-house sales team on 058 400 30 30 for a personal consultation. They will check your device and show you suitable alternatives.
What should you do now?
Don't panic - action is enough. Here is a simple step-by-step guide on how you can prepare yourself:
If your SIM card is affected: You have already been contacted by TalkTalk and have received a new SIM card. To have it activated, please contact our customer service at or visit a mobilezone store. If you do nothing, the new SIM card will be activated automatically on July 1 between 13:00 and 17:00.
Please note: Your old card will no longer work from this point on.
Check your cell phone: Does your cell phone not support VoLTE or only 3G? Then it will be unusable from July 2025 - time for a new model.
Get a new device: At mobilezone you will find many current smartphones that support 4G or 5G - often with installment payment and trade-in bonus. If you are looking for a sustainable alternative, you can also visit our Brand jusit, with a large selection of used cell phones.
